Your First Ketamine Infusion Appointment: What to Bring, What to Expect, and How to Prepare
Before You Come In
We ask that you fast for at least 4 to 6 hours before your appointment — no solid food, though small sips of water are fine. Please wear comfortable, loose clothing — think of it the way you would dress for a long, restful nap. You will also need to arrange for a trusted person to drive you home, as you will not be able to drive after your session. Plan for approximately 2 to 3 hours with us on your first visit.
What to Bring
- A valid photo ID and your insurance card if applicable
- A list of your current medications and dosages
- Any prior medical records, psychiatric evaluations, or lab work if you have them
- Your driver or a trusted companion for the ride home
- Headphones if you have a favorite calming playlist — many patients find music enhances their experience beautifully
When You Arrive
You will be greeted warmly and settled into our peaceful treatment space. There is no rushing here. Dr. Ali will personally walk through your medical history, your mental health journey, and your goals for treatment. This consultation typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.
The Infusion Itself
Once we are aligned on your treatment plan and all your questions are answered, we will get you comfortably settled in your reclining chair. A small IV will be placed — most patients find this surprisingly easy. We dim the lights, offer you a warm blanket, and gently begin the infusion. Your first session typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes, during which a member of the clinical team will be with you the entire time monitoring your comfort and safety.
After Your Infusion
When your session is complete, we give you unhurried time to rest and re-orient before you leave. We will check in with you, answer any questions about what you experienced, and talk through next steps in your treatment plan. Most patients feel calm and reflective afterward — some notice a subtle shift in mood or relief within hours, while for others the full effect builds over the course of the treatment series.
Frequently Asked Questions About Your First Visit
Do I need to fast completely before my appointment? We ask that you avoid solid food for at least 4 to 6 hours before your session. Small sips of water are fine.
What if I am on medications — should I take them as usual before my visit? Bring a complete list of your current medications and dosages to your appointment. Dr. Ali will review everything before your infusion begins.
Will I feel well enough to work or go about my day after my session? Most patients feel calm and reflective after their infusion rather than unwell. That said, you should plan to rest for the remainder of the day. You cannot drive, and we recommend keeping your schedule light after your appointment.
How soon after my consultation will my infusion happen? On your first visit, the consultation and your first infusion happen the same day. Once Dr. Ali has walked through your history and treatment goals, and you are both aligned on the plan, the infusion will follow.
